Rusununguko High Clinches Copa Coca Cola Title


The 29th edition of the boys Copa Coca Cola will be remembered for the Rusunguko High’s fairy-tale.

The Mashonaland East school had 10 of their players vetted out leaving them with the same number of eligible players for the 2017 U15 boys Copa Coca Cola tournament but they still went on to win tournament at Trojan Mine in Bindura on Saturday.

They beat Pfupajena 4-2after a penalty shootout after the match had ended 1-1 in regulation time.

That was the only goal that Rusunuguko conceded in the whole tourney and for their efforts Rusununguko pocketed $5 400 plus a trophy.

Pfupajena walked away with $ 3000, silver medals and a trophy.

Rusunguko head  Joseph Eremu coach  was over the moon for triumph.

What did he tell his super ten boys throughout the tournament?

"It was disappointing to lose 10 players to vetting, but I left everything to God and told our headmaster that it be our turning point.

"I urged them, encouraged them that their individual brilliance will take us through," he said.

"Plus these guys work hard they run 10 km every morning and after the evening study we do shuttles as well," said Eremu.

To cap off an unforgettable tournament for Rusunguko they produced the Player of the Tournament in Oscar Magejo, , best defender Adrian Svidzi while their keeper Denzel Marufu was voted the best goal keeper and also player of the final match.

Chidyamakono of Masvingo Province won the ladies competition for a record fifth successive title.

They beat Mamunyadza (Mutare) 1-0 for a record fifth successive title in the 7th edition of the girls category.

Beatrice Machona's second half strike settled matters for the ladies champions who won $ 3 500, gold medals and a trophy for their efforts.

The champions' head coach Yeukai Chirumo was over the moon.

"I am very happy, the happiest person on earth i thank God," she said.

"I have a strong junior policy and grateful to the head, staff and community at large for their support.

Runners up Mamunyadza pocketed $2 200, silver medals and a trophy.

Two-time girls winners Vainona High went down 0-1 to Mwenezi in the third place play off.

Mwenezi won $ 1600,bronze  medals and a trophy  while Vainona took home $1 100.

In the boys 3rd place play off hosts Chipindura edged Gutu 6-5 in penalty shoot-outs.

Chipindura won $ 2 000 and bronze medals while Gutu collected $ 1 500.

Twenty players in either gender were selected in the Dream Team set to play in the regional tournament who dates and hosts will be announced.
