Rebranded Mwana Africa Back In D1
Former Premiership side Mwana Africa have bounced back in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One with a new name, Trojan Stars, after gaining promotion as champions of the Mashonaland Central.
Trojan Stars’ promotion will see Division One football making a return to Bindura in 2017.
They will join Mushowani Stars and Darwin United, the other Division One teams from Mashonaland Central province.
Mashonaland Central chairperson Gilbert Saika congratulated the team and wished them all the best.
“Let me take this opportunity to thank all the teams who participated in our 2016 Division two league.
“It wasn’t a good year taking into consideration the economic challenges that saw some of the teams withdrawing from the league.
“Nevertheless we appreciate all the effort each and every club put in ensuring the smooth flow of the league.
“Mistakes are common from the clubs, board and referees and there is room for improvement for the 2017 soccer season.
Trojan Stars join Mufakose United and Harare City Under-19 in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One.
The team finished its 20 games with 13 wins four draws and three loses for a total 43 points, six better than Jumbo Giants who finished second.
Nine years after the Mashonaland Central provincial town experienced top flight football it remains to be seen if the same team but now rebranded can reach the same level.
Mwana Africa were once the toast of the province when they won the CBZ Cup in their debut top flight season, after beating Chapungu 1-0 in the final at Rufaro with Benjamin Marere scoring the priceless goal.
The Bindura miners, who were under the guidance of the late Highlanders' legend Willard Mashinkila-Khumalo, then went on an impressive run in the Caf Confederation Cup the following year falling just short of a group stage berth.
