PSL Summon Highlanders Over Chicken Inn Violence
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has summoned Highlanders to a disciplinary hearing over the violent conduct of their fans after the match against Chicken Inn two weeks ago.
According to the PSL, Highlanders will appear before the disciplinary committee on September 8 over the incident which happened on August 14. Highlanders’ fans ran amok after the match invading the pitch, throwing missiles at the police, leaving one police officer hospitalised.
The match commissioner in his report noted:
“Supporters on the Southern/Soweto end-mainly in Highlanders colours started throwing missiles on the pitch. As the police moved in to try and control the situation more missiles were thrown and the supporters then invaded the pitch throwing more missiles even at the police.
“Some of the supporters from the Eastern stand joined in the pandemonium forcing the police to retreat to the tunnels despite using dogs to scare away spectators.”
The match commissioner further stated that chaos ensued after both sets of players from Highlanders and Chicken Inn mobbed the referee and his first assistant in protest of a last minute incident of the game.
Tafadzwa Kutinyu put the ball behind the nets but referee Nkosikhona Moyo ruled it out on the basis that he had already blown for full time.
“Confusion then ensured as Highlanders players confronted the assistant referee demanding that he should have signalled for offside. Meanwhile the Chicken Inn players confronted the referee presumably for ending the game when their team was in a very good scoring position.”
