PSL Officially Charge Highlanders For Fans Behaviour
The PSL have finally released a statement condemning violence that rocked Barbourfields stadium on Sunday in a game between Highlanders and defending Castle lager PSL champions Chicken Inn.
Part of the statement read:
The Premier Soccer League strongly condemns the violence and hooliganism that took place after the PSL match between Highlanders and Chicken Inn played at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday 14 August 2016.
Violence and hooliganism have not place in football. Football fans should enjoy the game in a peaceful environment.
Violence and hooliganism at football matches may fracture working relationships within and among football stakeholders.
Meanwhile the PSL has received match reports from both the referee and match commissioner. We will proceed and charge Highlanders FC for the behaviours of their fans. The club will be charged in terms of Order 31.1.13 of the PSL Rules and Regulations.
Tafadzwa Kutinyu scored what should have been Chicken Inn’s winner, in time added on, but referee Nkosikhona Moyo disallowed the goal saying that he had blown to end the match by the time the midfielder fired home.
The match ended 1-1 and Chicken Inn players felt hard done by the officials mobbed the referee demanding answers and in the process, Obadiah Tarumbwa slapped Highlander’s defender Peter Muduwa leading to Bosso fans invading the pitch. It was during the pitch invasion that the police details were outnumbered and one a police officer was severely assaulted by fans.
Highlanders fans are set to cost the club after the violence. Under PSL standing orders and regulations, pitch invasions by supporters cost the offending club $2 000.
Highlanders are already struggling financially and another fine will likely add more woes to the club.
