PSL, Delta Sponsorship Renewal Talks Promising

PREMIER Soccer League acting chairman Kenny Mubaiwa has described sponsorship talks with their Delta Beverages as ‘positive’.

The initial PSL six year sponsorship deal with Delta Beverages ended last December but renewal talks were being hampered by boardroom squabbles that rocked PSL and ZIFA towards the end of 2016.

Delta’s marketing executive Maxen Karombo was last year not happy with the tiff that was between PSL and ZIFA and indicated they were not negotiating for sponsorship renewal with PSL that was facing a leadership crisis following the suspension of chairman Peter Dube by ZIFA.

But things seem to be well on course now with the PSL’s three-member Emergency Committee handling the talks with the sponsors.

One of the members Kenny Mubaiwa, although he could not pre-empt the current negotiations which started last month, described the engagement as going on very well saying a position should be reached before March 18 when PSL clubs convene for their annual indaba.

“It (the sponsorship package from Delta) is promising. But just before the AGM we should have a position so that we have something to report to the clubs,” said Mubaiwa.

The league has been earmarked to start during the first week of April and PSL are to negotiate for a package that now caters for an expanded league after the number of top-flight teams was increased to 18 following the Zifa Assembly resolution to demote two clubs while promoting four from the regions.

Four teams — Yadah Stars, Shabanie Mine, Black Rhinos and Bantu Rovers — have been promoted into the top-flight league.
