Pasuwa Keeps Nation Guessing
WARRIORS coach Callisto Pasuwa left the nation guessing and said he had nothing more to talk about his resignation when the team returned home on Wednesday afternoon from a disastrous campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Confronted by the media at the Harare International Airport Pasuwa said he was not in a position to discuss his future preferring to consult his manager Gibson Mahachi about the his future with the Warriors.
Pasuwa told The Herald on Tuesday that he was stepping down after his team finished bottom of the table in Group B at the tournament in Gabon.
The Warriors arrived Wednesday midday via Addis Ababa to a quiet reception at the Harare International Airport.
There was no big crowd to welcome the team from their failed tour of duty except a few close family members of some of the players.
Zimbabwe were winless in all their three matches.
They drew 2-2 with Algeria in their opening match before going down 0-2 to tournament favourites Senegal in the second match.
The Warriors succumbed to a 2-4 defeat to Tunisia in their last group match on Monday night which sealed their fate.
Stung by the results, Pasuwa told the Herald he was throwing in the towel and would confirm his decision once he meets his manager Mahachi and his employers at ZIFA.
However, the former midfielder was coy on his position when he was quizzed by reporters upon the team’s arrival from Gabon on Wednesday afternoon.
“On that I have no comment as of now. I have to meet my manager first. No comment,” said Pasuwa.
Pasuwa nonetheless confirmed that captain Willard Katsande had resigned from international football.
He said Katsande approached him on the decision to quit the Warriors and concentrate on club career but advised the 31-year old midfielder to reconsider his decision.
Pasuwa said Katsande’s experience was still needed especially with the 2019 qualifiers approaching.
“I think he is one guy who has been a pillar in the team. He has been giving guidance to the players and I think maybe he needs to reconsider his decision and come back for another dance with the Warriors,” said Pasuwa.
