Outrage Over Caps v Mazembe Ref
The appointment of Seychelles referee Bernard Camille to take charge of Caps United’s make or break CAF Champions League clash against TP Mazembe on Sunday has sparked an outrage as he is the same guy who was accused of biased refereeing when the DR Congo giants controversially beat Orlando Pirates back in 2013.
After Mazembe had fallen 1-3 to Pirates in South Africa in the first leg of the second round tie on April 20, 2013 the return leg in Lubumbashi was full of controversy as the home side sought to overturn the deficit.
Mazembe were awarded two controversial penalties which were saved by the late Senzo Meyiwa and as if that was not enough, Pirates skipper and influential player Lucky Lekgwathi was shown a red card in a 50-50 situation.
The DR Congo giants won the match 1-0 but failed to progress to the group stage.
Caps play Mazembe at the NSS on Sunday on the back of a 1-1 draw in the first leg away in Lubumbashi last weekend.
Sunday Mail Sports Editor Makomoborero Mutimukulu stirred the debate Thursday morning after news spread that Camille had been assigned to handle the Caps United versus TP Mazembe match.
“How Caf have settled for Bernard Camille, a man with a history of aiding TP Mazembe for Sunday's clash against Makepekepe is bewildering.
“This is the guy who screwed Orlando Pirates in Lubumbashi back in 2013. He awarded Mazembe dubious penalties and dished out red cards like those free blue and white condoms,” Mutimukulu posted on his Facebook page.
Popular Warriors supporter Alvin “Aluvha” Zhakata waded into the debate
“And history tells us kuti despite the red card and 2 penalties and the 13minutes injury time Pirates still overcame. Caps shud overcome watever is thrown at them if they really want to be conquerors,” he posted.
Another football fan Obert Muchena thinks Caf’s decision to appoint such a referee is motivated by the need to get back at ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa who has been championing the anti Hayatou campaign.
“Which is why I think Philip Chiyangwa is right in wanting to remove Hayatou,” wrote Muchena.
Mzwandile Ndabakaze wrote: “One is tempted to think that it all borders on Captain Fiasco escapades at CAF!!!”
“seriously they don't like teams from this side,” said Innocent Zisengwe.
“Captain Fiasco (Philip Chiyangwa) ndovakadenha zvese izvi,” is Craig Misiye’s thinking.
