Old Georgians Lose To False Bay
Zimbabwe champions Old Georgians lost their second South Africa RUGBY Union Gold Cup game 38-25 at home to South African side False Bay on Saturday.
The Gold Cup is the top competition for non-university rugby union clubs in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, with one slot for Zimbabwe for the first time.
Old Georgians started their Gold Cup campaign with an 18-20 win over South African side White River and hopes were high for a second win as False Bay traveled to Harare with an injury hit squad.
The first half was an evenly balanced affair with few tries coming by. The visitors who hail from Western Cape capitalised on lax defending by the hosts to score two tries soon after the breather.
The Zimbabwean side later mounted a comeback to trail the visitors 21-20 but poor defending costed once again when they gifted False Bay with two tries to put the match beyond them.
The defeat left OGs fourth in pool C which has five teams. False Bay now leads the standings with 11 points but having played a game more than OGs. Brakpan are second on nine from two games whilst Durban Collegians have seven points from three games and are placed 3rd followed by Old Georgians on four from two games as well. White river anchors the pool with just a point.
Old Georgians coach Grant was happy with the team's performance despite the defeat.
“We played well against one of the best teams in South Africa. In the first half we were compact but in the second half we relaxed a bit conceding those tries. But overally I am impressed, “said Mitchell.
False Bay captain Graeme Knoop commended Georgians for their brave show.
