New Contract System For Warriors Mulled
Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has learnt from the embarrassing episode which saw the Warriors stage an industrial action on the eve of their departure for the Afcon finals.
The football mother body is now mulling a new contract system for national team players.
Zimbabwe’s national team players demanded $5 000 each per game as appearance fee and refused to board the plane on the morning of January 7 after ZIFA had initially failed to commit.
The Warriors only left for Gabon via Cameroon after ZIFA had agreed to pay each player the demanded figure during a sad weekend for Zimbabwean soccer that also saw the players snub the Ministry of Sport organised send off ceremony.
Subsequently ZIFA board member finance Philemon Machana, who revealed that the association had suffered a loss after the failed Afcon campaign, called for a review of the player contract system on Wednesday.
The Harare businessman told The Herald that it was imperative for the association to review contracts they enter with the players for various international assignments.
He said this would ensure that agreements are signed prior to the start of each camp “to avoid some embarrassing scenes like the one we witnessed when the Warriors snubbed a farewell dinner organised for them by the Government.”
“We should not have this culture of holding the administration to ransom because at times some of the demands eventually prove costly to both the players and the association,” Machana told The Herald.
