Ndebele On PSL Fixtures

THE Castle lager Premier Soccer League believes their decision to fixture the title chasing trio of CAPS United, FC Platinum and Highlanders on different days has done no harm to the title home run but will instead consider having the three teams play at the same time beginning week 28.

The trio went into match day 27 separated by just three points and there is a feeling among some stakeholders that having them play on different times gives an advantage to CAPS United and Highlanders who usually play on Sundays knowing Saturday results.

Others contend it is CAPS United and Highlanders who are at a disadvantage as they always have pressure to keep up or surpass what FC Platinum would have done.

The same views have been aired in respect of relegation fighters Mutare City, Tsholotsho and Border Strikers.

The league’s Chief Executive Officer Kenny Ndebele, however, said although such concerns have reached his office, the clubs themselves were yet to officially lodge complains and the league has not seen anything to suggest that the competition is being compromised.

“We have heard those concerns especially from the social media but the concerned clubs have not complained to us,” said Ndebele.

“We don’t believe any team is getting an advantage for playing on different days because pressure is always there in football whether your rival has won their match or lost or whether you are playing under the watch of your rival.

“There is also the issue to do with television program where we don’t want a fixture program that compromises our chances of capitalising on the screening of matches,” said Ndebele.

The PSL boss however hinted that same time kickoff could start in the last three rounds of fixtures beginning with matchday 28.

“There will obviously come a time when we will consider playing matches at the same time and maybe that will be for week 28, 29 and 30 but for now I think it’s a bit too early.

“Even if you check at the way we have done it over the past five years you will realise that it has not been this early and we have had no problems at all.

“It’s the same situation even internationally where you find FC Barcelona and Real Madrid playing at different times despite them always locked in a battle for La Liga but you don’t hear complaints of the competition being compromised,” he said.
