Mukuruva Explains New Transformation
WARRIORS goalie Tatenda Mukuruva admits more is demanded from him now.
It will no longer be about the great saves or accuracy in distributing the ball.
But just like what Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola demands, he has to play more with his feet.
Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa realises he has to move with modern trends and he is demanding that from the young Dynamos goalkeeper.
Mukuruva says he will have to learn fast - intime for the 2017 AFCON finals in Gabon.
"I'm adjusting very well beacause that's how the coach wants me to play although you can't learn everythng within a day.
"We are trying to practice it during training and games so that I can be more comfortable bacause these days goalkeepers are also needed to start play from the back and also counter attacks," says Mukuruva.
Against Tanzania, a game the Warriors won 3-0, Mukuruva had more touches to the ball in the first half than some of the infield players.
That kept the fans on the edge.
And at times the fans whistled, perhaps signaling dangerous play as the goalkeeper consistently exchanged passes with Danny Phiri, Teenage Hadebe, Onismor Bhasera, Hardlife Zvirekwi and Willard Katsande.
With Mukuruva very much involved while Nyasha Mushekwi played at the 'tip', Pasuwa's charges had many layers to their game.
Without perfection on another day, it could be dangerous play.
Mukuruva admits that against Tanzania, there were times when they played it too deep.
"The communication was good that's why we managed to keep a clean sheet although sometimes I think we defended too deep," he says.
The young goalie however believes that playing to instruction is what matters.
And he will not be changing the style for his own comfort.
Pasuwa stated that by playing it more from the goalie, it stretches the opponents and gives the likes of Marvelous Nakamba, Knowledge Musona, Khama Billiat and Kuda Mahachi a chance to attack with much room.
It could just help dismantle Algeria, Tunisia and Senegal, teams in the same group (B) with Zimbabwe at Gabon 2017.
"I think we played very well against Tanzania making use of some of the variations. We managed to play according to the coach's plan which is very important for every game we play in the future," he says.
To add to the new style of play, Mukuruva has been working under a lot of pressure with a lot of Warriors debates centered on him.
He will draw comfort from support from the coach and teammates.
"If it works why change it?" Mathew Rusike posed the question after the Tanzania game.
Pasuwa, just like how Pep defends Bravo, says he best knows why Mukuruva is his number one.
The goalie has also found comfort in seeing a teammate from school, Tino Kadewere, finally joining him on the big stage.
"I'm very happy that Tino joined us, it shows that he is working very hard and he is technically very good,he can take on defenders and I think that will help us score more goals," says Mukuruva.
He remembers the good old days - when they dominated their age group whilst at school.
"I know him very well. He was my classmate at PE (Prince Edward) and we played together at School and also for the Young Warriors."
That he got the seal of approval from Pasuwa, will not be reason for Mukuruva to sit on his laurels.
He has Donovan Bernard breathing down his neck.
It is a situation most of the players in the team also find themselves in. Few are spared.
"The competition is very tough but healthy because that's what is needed in a team so tht we get positive results and achieve because everyone will be putting more than 100 percent effort to fight for a place," says Mukuruva.
