Mkuruva's Last Minute Move Explained
Zimbabwe international keeper Tatenda Mkuruva’s last minute move to Cape Town City was prompted by injuries to the club’s two goalkeepers, it has emerged.
Although Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler says his club was fortunate to have Mkuruva, the Bafana Bafana legend told South African website Laduma that the deal was more a reactionary move.
The 20-year-old Mkuruva was one of the best performing players during Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup Of Nations campaign, which ended in Gabon last Sunday.
Explaining the move for Mkuruva Tinkler said he had to act quickly to sign the former Dynamos star, as both the club’s first team goalkeepers, Shuaib Walters and Samora Motloung, went down injured in their training sessions.
“We don’t believe the ones that are playing for Diski are entirely ready to make that step up in to the first team, so we obviously needed to look outside.
“If you think about it, at the time, the window period was already closed and to try and find somebody was always going to be difficult.
“I think we just got extremely fortunate, we had a young goalkeeper who has been playing in AFCON for Zimbabwe and he was readily available for us to sign and we grabbed that opportunity,” he said.
Mkuruva could be thrown into the fray on Saturday February 11 when Cape Town City play Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium.
