Mkuruva Still Waiting For A Start
Warriors keeper Tatenda Mkuruva watched from the bench on Friday night as his ABSA Premiership side Cape Town City became the first club to complete a double over Khama Billiat’s Mamelodi Sundowns since 2012.
Lebogang Manyama’s goal ensured a 1-0 victory for Eric Tinkler’s boys.
The victory also makes Eric Tinkler the first coach to get the better of Mosimane home and away in the league over the last 51 months.
Through the four years and three months that Mosimane has been on the bench at Sundowns there hasn’t been a club or coach that has been able to take all six points against him in the same season.
City shocked The Brazilians at Loftus back in October with a 2-1 win in which Manyama scored a brace, and on Friday night the same man scored the only goal that made the difference and sealed all six points from the defending champions.
The last team to complete a double over Sundowns was Moroka Swallows under Zeca Marques during the 2012-13 season.
In the first round played on September 30, 2012 at Dobsonville Stadium, Swallows were 2-0 winners with Lerato Chabangu and Felix Obada on target – Dutchman Johan Neeskens was still calling the shots for Sundowns at the time.
Then in the corresponding fixture, played on March 5, 2013 at Loftus Versfeld, Siyabonga Nomvete’s penalty coversion meant The Birds had bagged all six points from Sundowns. In the second match Mosimane was now in charge having taken over three months earlier.
In fact, The Birds went on to hand The Brazilians another defeat in the MTN8 semi-finals, winning the second leg 3-2 at Dobsonville having played out a 3-3 draw in the first leg.
This season it has been the two teams from the Mother City that have handed the African champions their three defeats with Ajax Cape Town having beaten the African champions 2-0 at end of November last year.
