Mhari Excited By National Team Call Up
HIS Warriors call up on Wednesday surely generated a lot of interest as the Warriors caretaker coach named FC Platinum goalkeeper Petros Mhari in the squad which will face Zambia in an international friendly match on Sunday at the National Sports Stadium.
It is Mhari’s first national team call up and the move has left the player excited.
Speaking to Sporszone.co.zw on Wednesday, the goalkeeper said he will not speak about how he felt when he was overlooked for Africa Cup of Nations by the Warriors previous coach Callisto Pasuwa.
There was a huge outcry and debate on social media following the omission of the Castle Lager Premiership Goalkeeper of the Year in the final squad which went to the Nations Cup.
On his way to be crowned the best goalkeeper in Zimbabwe, Mhari managed 19 clean sheets in the league and two in Chibuku Super Cup.
The omission went on to attract a number of plots and sub lots to explain why Pasuwa kept his faith on his trusted lieutenants Tatenda Mukuruvari and Donovan Bernard at the expense of the in-form goalie.
This week Mhari saw him earning a first call up following the elevation on Norman Mapeza to the hot seat.
It appears it was inevitable that the coach would overlook his club first choice but the goalie said he would rather focus on the present.
“I felt happy. It is my first time to be in the Warriors camp. I do not want to say anything regarding Afcon because I hate drawing attention.
“I am just excited because it is everyone’s wish to represent the country,” he said.
Mhari will compete for a first team place with CAPS United goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda and Highlanders gloveman Ariel Sibanda in the makeshift squad.
