Mayor Tears Into Harare City Football Club

HARARE City Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni is worried about the huge amounts the council is spending on Premiership side Harare Football Club at a time service delivery is poor.

Responding to an article written by The Herald Senior Sports Editor Robson Sharuko last Saturday, which questioned the Mayor’s decisions and contradictions related to his position as patron of Harare City Football Club, Manyenyeni stuck to his guns.

“As patron of Harare City Football Club, my duty to support them has always been compelling, but should never be some blind duty.

“I have quizzed the amounts involved – I challenge the quantum not the game itself.

“To allocate $2 million to one team when 25 of our 47 garbage trucks are permanently grounded and we have garbage all over the show doesn’t look smart,” read part of Manyenyeni’s response in Tuesday’s Herald.

Harare City football club are one of the best funded teams in the top flight league and Harare residents have often questioned the council’s priorities in a city that is known more for its poor service delivery.
