Mapeza Satisfied With Warriors Performance...Coy On Future
Interim Warriors coach Norman Mapeza says he was satisfied by the Warriors display in the 0-0 draw against Zambia in an international friendly match at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The hastily assembled Warriors were far from convincing managing only one shot on target the whole match and huffed and puffed the whole afternoon without creating meaningful chances.
But Mapeza believes the technical department noted some positives in the way the team played.
“People are entitled to their own views but I am pleased with the way the boys played considering a lot of factors. We are in the off season and some of the players were giving in towards the end and also they had just assembled," said Mapeza.
“Our biggest problem was upfront, we were affected by the unavailability of Evans Rusike and Tendai Ndoro. Prince Dube played well and is a striker with a lot of energy and potential but we also needed experience upfront".
Despite settling first, Zimbabwe didn't trouble the Zambians with the only talking points in the first half being two booming free kicks from the big goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda which however went off target.
Ronald Chitiyo had moments of individual brilliance towards the end of the game when he checked inside on the right before releasing a shot which was tipped over by Kennedy Mweene. However it was Mweene's opposite number who was busier of the two goalkeepers with the Zimbabwe goalkeeper making some telling saves to keep his team in the game.
Zambia under coach Wedson Nyirenda were using the match in preparation for the forthcoming 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2018 African Nations Championships qualifiers while Zimbabwe were still to appoint a substantive coach.
Mapeza said he was in the dark about the future and he was just merely answering a national call of duty by guiding the Warriors until a substantive coach was named.
“Look this is a national duty, today it's me, tomorrow it can be Chitembwe or Chidzambwa. It is Zimbabwe which made me to be who I am now so when duty calls I am bound to answer like I did but as for tomorrow I don’t know. I will just have to wait and hear what Zifa says but me I was just responding to their call to serve on this job at hand. I can't talk about anything besides this,'' added Mapeza.
The Warriors are without a substantive coach following the sacking of Kalisto Pasuwa in February.
