Manchester United Clinch EFL Cup
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in the final minutes as Manchester United snatched a 3-2 win over Southampton to be crowned EFL Cup champions in an enthralling final at Wembley.
The Saints looked to have taken the lead after just 11 minutes into Sunday night's clash as Manolo Gabbiadini tucked home from Cedric Soares’s low delivery from close range, although the goal was incorrectly ruled out for off-side.
The Red Devils soon rubbed salt in the wounds as they opened the scoring nine minutes later, Ibrahimovic’s free-kick finding a gap in the wall before curling away from the diving Fraser Forster and into the back of the net.
Jose Mourinho’s men were then two goals to the good with 38 minutes gone following some slick play from Jesse Lingard, who showed plenty of composure to control in the area to turn away from his marker before calmly rolling the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
However, Southampton weren’t out of the game and pulled a goal back in first-half injury time as James Ward-Prowse produced a brilliant delivery into the area to find Gabbiadini, who was unquestionably on-side as he flicked the ball through the legs of David de Gea to make it 2-1.
Just three minutes into the second-half and the scores were level, January signing Gabbiadini proving his worth to manager Claude Puel with his second goal of the night and fifth in three games, turning and shooting in almost one motion to drill his effort past the helpless De Gea.
The Saints came within a whisker of taking the lead shortly after the hour mark but Oriol Romeu saw his header from Ward-Prowse’s corner denied by the woodwork, while at the other end Lingard’s last contribution before being substituted was to narrowly flash his shot over the crossbar from close range.
But with just three-and-a-half minutes remaining Manchester United struck the telling blow, Ibrahimovic starting a counter attack before rounding it off, rising unmarked in the centre of the penalty area to meet Ander Herrera’s pin-point delivery to thump his header through the arms of Foster and hand Mourinho his first trophy at Old Trafford.
