Makonese Guides Shabanie To The Top
Ageless Zvenyika Makonese guided Shabanie Mine to the top of the Central Soccer league with a 2-0 win over former premiership side Whawha at Maglas stadium on Sunday.
Makonese who has been converted into a striker poked home from close range early in the first half before providing an assist to Lloyd Gwerina for the second goal.
Despite the win Shabanie Mine Coach Tendai Chikuni remains modest, saying it’s too early to talk about them as title.
“It’s good that we have won but we can’t be talking about the title at this moment because the league is tough. Today you might be on top and next you will be dethroned,” said Chikuni.
“The most important thing is for us to continue getting maximum points until the end of the season. We have teams like Tongogara, Blanket Mine and Ivan Hoe who are very strong and are pushing hard.”
Blanket Mine who have led the log standings for a long time relinquished the top spot after being held to a 1-1 draw by FC Platinum U19.
Third placed Tongogara were held to a disappointing goalless stalemate with struggling ZPC Munyati. Pre season favourites Midlands State University coached by former Shabanie coach John Phiri continued to lose ground dropping to ninth position, a massive 13 points behind the log leaders.
