Majika Wary Of Indomitable Lionesses Backlash
Mighty Warriors vice-captain, Nobuhle Majika says they should be prepared for a tough task at the Africa Women Cup of Nations where they will take on hosts Cameroon, Egypt and South Africa in Group A.
Zimbabwe will face Cameroon, whom they beat on their way to the Olympic Games, South Africa, who were the other African country at the Games in Brazil last month and Egypt.
The tournament will take place in Yaoundé and Limbe, in Cameroon from November 19 to December 3.
And the top two teams from each group will proceed to the semi-finals.
Majika, who was part of the team at the Olympics said although it’s a tough group they will be out to show their best at the tournament.
“I think it’s a tough group especially with Cameroon. They would want to take revenge on us because we beat them. They didn’t think we could beat them. But we are also hoping to beat them.
“We know our goal, we want to go to the finals so we have to work hard, have more friendlies and prepare, that will help us come out with the results we want,” said Majika.
Speaking on their friendly against Egypt slated for Tuesday at Rufaro, Majika said they are geared up despite having a short camp, which started on Sunday.
“We didn’t get much time to train but I think we will continue from where we left. There is so much competition because everyone is working hard to earn their place in the team to go to Africa Cup of Nations. Some were dropped for Brazil so everyone is working hard.
“It’s not an easy game because they also want to win, so we should not underrate them and we are taking the games seriously,” Majika said.
The match kicks off at 4pm.
Zimbabwe will be making their fourth appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations. They took part in the 2000, 2002 and 2004 editions. Their best performance was in 2000 when they finished fourth, in the other two editions they were knocked out in the group stages.
Group B is made up of defending champions Nigeria, Ghana, Mali and Kenya.
Nigeria have won the tournament a record nine times while Equatorial Guinea have won the title twice. They are the only two countries that have won the tournament since it was first contested in 1991.
Zimbabwe will begin their campaign against South Africa on November 19. They will then play Egypt on the 22nd and complete their group matches against Cameroon on November 25.
