Liverpool Lose Ground
Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland saw them lose ground on table-topping Chelsea in an action–packed Monday of Premier League football.
Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring after heading home from a flicked on corner in the 20th minute, only for Jermain Defoe to slot home from the penalty spot six minutes later to restore parity.
The Reds however retook the lead, once again from a corner, as Sadio Mane – who will shortly depart for Afcon duty – slotted home from close range. Mane turned from hero to villain soon after, as he handled the ball in the box while defending a Sunderland free-kick, as Defoe once again stepped up to slot home from the spot.
Sunderland held on for a vital point, while Liverpool lose out on closing the gap to Chelsea, who play London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, Manchester City temporarily jumped up to third after a 2-1 win over Burnley, Sergio Aguero and Gael Clichy netting early in the second half to give the ten-man Citizens the advantage after Fernandinho’s third red card in six games in the 32nd minute. Been Mee’s 70th minute goal was a mere consolation as Pep Guardiola’s men secured maximum points.
A Enner Valencia goal, Leighton Baines penalty and fine Romelu Lukaku strike earned Everton a 3-0 win over Southampton, Leicester and Middlesbrough couldn’t be separated in a goalless draw while West Brom were 3-1 winner over Hull City.
