League Title Goes To The Wire

CAPS United survived a late surge from Ngezi Platinum Stars to keep alive their hopes for a first league title in 11 years with a 1-0 at the National Sports Stadium while FC Platinum ended Highlanders dominance at Mandava stadium with an emphatic 3-0 victory.

The title will now be decided next weekend with Caps United travelling to Gweru to play against Chapungu while FC Platinum are away to Tsholotsho in Bulawayo.

Ngezi Platinum Stars who were billed as kingmakers after disturbing FC Platinum in the title chase with a draw at Mandava before handing Highlanders a defeat in the Chibuku Super Cup which affected Bosso’s rhythm caused a scare in the first minute when a Terrence Dzukamanja shot hit the woodwork in the first minute.

But CAPS United recovered and took control of the match with Devon Chafa with a lot of physical play controlling the midfield while Simba Nhivi was a constant threat upfront.

With the momentum on their side, Nhivi put the log leaders ahead ten minutes from half time tapping in a pin point cross from impressive Ronal Pfumbidzai. CAPS United finished the first half in total control but came back into the second half a bit subdued.

Kenneth Bulaji could have punished CAPS four minutes after the resumption when he was allowed acres of space but he shot wide.

Growing in confidence, Ngezi Platinum Stars pinned themselves in the Makepekepe half towards the end of the match in search of an equaliser and had a strong shout for a penalty fifteen minutes from time but they were turned down by referee Arnold Ncube.

Elsewhere, FC Platinum got their first win over Highlanders at Mandava stadium since 2011 with Gerald Takwara, Walter Musona and Charles Sibanda getting the goals.

The result was also sweet victory for FC Platinum who had struggled on week 29, dropping crucial points which affected their title chase in 2011, 2013 and 2015.

At Gibbo stadium, Dynamos edged Triangle 1-0 with a late Godknows Murwira strike while Chicken Inn beat Border Strikers 1-0 at Luveve stadium.

Hwange and Chapungu played out a goalless draw at the Colliery.
