La Liga Wrap: Barca Stunned, Real Held
Reigning champions Barcelona missed a golden chance to go top of the La Liga standings after their shock 4-3 loss away at Celta Vigo.
The Catalans found themselves 3-0 down at half-time, as the opener from South Sudan’s Pione Sisto, a counter-attack goal finished off by Iago Aspas and an own goal by Jeremy Mathieu gave the hosts a commanding lead, with Barca conceding three first-half goals in the league for the first time since 2007.
Luis Enrique’s charges, minus the injured Lionel Messi, responded soon after the interval as Gerard Pique’s header brought a goal back, with Neymar’s penalty on 64 minutes giving his side renewed hope of completijg the comeback.
Yet a howler from goalkeeper Marc Ter Stegen, where he cleared the ball into the head of the onrushing Pablo Hernandez, gifted Celta back their two-goal cushion, and despite a nervy last few minutes after Pique headed home his side’s third, Celta held on for a hard-fought win to jump up to 11th on the table.
Earlier in the day, Atletico Madrid saw off Valencia 2-0, Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro netting for Diego Simeone’s side, who temporarily went top of the table.
A win for Real Madrid would see them leapfrog their city rivals, yet it was not to be as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Eibar. Fran Rico headed the visitors into the lead, only for Gareth Bale to cancel out the game’s opener to draw the side level on 17 minutes.
Los Blancos streamed forward at every attempt thereafter, yet could not break down a resilient Eibar defence as they only managed a point, joining Atletico at the top of the La Liga standings on 15 points after seven games.
