Katsande Defends Under Fire Coach

KAIZER Chiefs Player of the Year and Warriors skipper has defended coach Steve Komphela who is facing a barrage of criticism in the wake of Amakhosi’s poor start to the 2016/2017 ABSA Premiership campaign.

Chiefs are yet to register a win this season in three matches across all competitions and fans are up in arms against Komphela, but Katsande says it is the players who must raise their hands to change the situation around.

Amakhosi begun the season with a 1-2 loss to Cuthbert Malajila’s new team Bidwest Wits and followed that up with a 0-1 defeat against Cape Town City in the first round of the MTN Top Eight tournament.

A 1-1 draw against Platinum Stars followed up and Kaizer Chiefs find themselves with one point after two rounds of Premiership action.

Next up, they travel to Tapuwa Kapini’s Highlands Park for an Absa Premiership fixture on Wednesday.

“It's unfair to criticise the coach because we are a club, it's like us as players criticising our own players,” Katsande told Kick Off.

“So I think it's unfair; we need to take responsibility and raise our hands and say, ‘now we need to play better’. I think that's the main thing and not to single out an individual … that's unfair.”

Katsande believes his side’s main problem has been the way they have been conceding goals with three of the four goals they shipped in this season coming in the first half.

The Zimbabwean national team captain wants to see that change.

“We are working on that to change the situation. The only people who can change that is us who are in the situation,” he said.

“It is just a matter of time until we will get it right. I think we just need to bury the chances we create and also to avoid conceding in the first half. That's our big setback for now.

“We are working towards pulling out from this situation; like I said, we are the only people who will take ourselves out of this position. We just need to stick together and be mentally strong and try to turn the tables around.”
