Harare North Dominate National Tourney
An affluent mix of primary schoolboys grouped under the ambits of Harare North comfortably beat other select sides to seize the Owen Davies Inter-provincial rugby tournament at St John's Preparatory recently.
It is an annual event for district select teams that was this year hosted by St John's to coincide with the private boys' school's 60th anniversary.
Harare North were comprised of the hosts, Heritage, Hartmann House, Gateway, Hellenic, Alex Park, Highlands and Eaglesvale.
Coached by Tariro Chawafambira and Wellington Ndimutseyi, Harare North proved too powerful for their adversaries from Matabeleland, Easterns, Mashonaland West, Harare South, Harare West, South Eastern Districts and the stand-in Harare Barbarians who replaced Midlands who did not pitch up.
Barbarians though defied their late inclusion by emerging as winners of the Most Spirited Team Award. The side was composed of fringe players from the Harare North geographical divide.
St John's pupil Daniel Erasmus was named Player of the Tournament after inspiring Harare North to a 19-10 victory over Harare South in the final. The latter team was under the guidance of Raymond Mazvipawani and Jimmy Chikange.
According to Ndimutseyi, who is also the St John's Prepartory sports master, the day-long tournament proved to be a showcase of budding talent as all sides acquitted themselves well.
"There was little to separate all the teams and the teams from outside Harare particularly played well but were maybe affected by fatigue as they had travelled long distances,'' said Ndimutseyi.
Eastern, from Manicaland, reached the third-place play off before succumbing to Mashonaland West who took the tie with a heavy 36-0 score. Harare West also collected the Plate trophy after accounting for Barbarians 10-6.
Impressive Harare North won all their group matches 29-5 over Harare West, 19-0 over Mashonaland West, 26-3 over Barbarians and 34-0 over Easterns in the last four stage.
