Gvt Fed Up With ZIFA, PSL Feud
Government is fed up with the never ending feud between ZIFA and the Premier Soccer League and has threatened to crack the whip through its arm, the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC).
ZIFA and PSL are disagreeing on the number of teams to be promoted into the top flight league with the former adamant four teams should go up while the latter wants two.
The dispute has already led to the suspension of PSL chairman Peter Dube, Caps United chairman Lewis Uriri and has spilled into the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa recently appointed Dynamos president Keni Mubaiwa to run the affairs of the PSL but the move has met stiff resistance from the PSL clubs.
The impasse has degenerated to a level where both parties now communicate via lawyers.
FIFA doesn’t allow government to interfere directly with football matters so the Ministry of Sport and Recreation can only use the SRC as a vehicle.
And on Thursday night, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, Lisius Kunaka, said government was not impressed with the current situation.
He was speaking at the Caps United end of year awards held at Rainbow Towers, on behalf of Minister Makhosini Hlongwane who could not attend.
He declared that government would soon crack the whip.
“At the end of the day football should be the winner. Decisions made should benefit football and not for personal aggrandizement,” he said.
“The Ministry, through the SRC will not hesitate to crack the whip on the culprits.”
