Gorowa Contemplated Suicide

Former Warriors coach Ian Gorowa has revealed that he contemplated taking his own life after being implicated in a match fixing scandal in 2016.

Speaking at the burial of close friend Edzai Kasinauyo at Glen Forest in Harare at the weekend, Gorowa said the tainting of his image affected him badly such that he saw no reason for living.

“There was no truth in those things, I don't want to go back there. I don't want to even talk about it because I wanted to commit suicide, I couldn’t stand it. Actually it’s Edzai who lambasted me and said we should clear our names," said Gorowa.

“There was no truth in those allegations at all except damaging our reputation. The sad part is that it's him Edzai who kept me going but he had to leave. I will leave it as it is, Edzai has passed on and I hope he has forgiven whoever was trying to do whatever they were saying. I am happy and glad that I had Edzai in my life and I am happy I am here to celebrate the life of Edzai for me that is very important. Like I said I don't want to go there and talk about it," added Gorowa.

Some of the former Warriors players who played alongside Kasinauyo took Zifa vice president Omega Sibanda to task over the association's handling of the matter.  The players had a mini meeting at the Kasinauyo residence and so agitated were some of the former players that they wanted the Zifa second in command thrown out of the tent. A former player who spoke to SportsZone on condition of anonymity said they wanted to know why the association rushed to blow the lid without tangible evidence.

"Edzai was a strong character but this affected him big time, remember he was now into business and you can't conduct business with such a tainted image even if you were cleared."

“Omega tried to clear his name saying it wasn't him because as the vice president he doesn't pass decisions but we didn't have none of it because the bottom line is that they passed that decision as Zifa board with Philip Chiyangwa. He was even afraid to come for the burial because he was terrified. But we just wanted was an explanation and also respect for former players because it’s us who made a contribution that sees them occupy those positions," said the former player.

Gorowa and the late Kasinauyo were alleged to be part of a syndicate to fix national team matches as well as South African premier soccer league matches using Zimbabwean players based there. The duo were implicated together with former Zifa chief executive officer Henrietta Rushwaya and Nation Dube who was assistant to Kalisto Pasuwa at the national team at the time

The allegations also led to the suspension of Kasinauyo from the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) board.

The quartet were found not guilty in the courts of law resulting in the Chiyangwa led board lifting their ban in March.
