Georgians Belongs To The Elite League: Coach
Old Georgians coach Grant Mitchell says his club has shown that it can compete among the best in the region despite bowing out of the SARU Gold Cup on Saturday after losing to Siyaya Brakpan 29-16.
Mitchell said his team’s performance showed that Zimbabwe is laden with talent and reckons that had it not been for minor errors, Old Georgians could have progressed to the quarter finals of the tournament.
“It was a match that Old Georgians lost through our own errors. By no measure was the opposition significantly better than us in any facet of the game. Unfortunately at this level when you make mistakes, you lose control of the scoreboard,” said Mitchell.
The Old Georgians Coach said despite the defeat, he was proud of his side’s performance in the tournament which is the top competition for non-university rugby union clubs in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
“To sum up the Gold Cup, Old Georgians belongs to this level and it shows that there is potential and talent in Zimbabwe rugby. We are proud of our performances as Old Georgians and as Zimbabwe club rugby players.”
The Zimbabwean champions managed two wins and two losses in the four pool matches they played.
They won in the first match away to White River before losing to False Bay in their second match.
OGs managed to find the winning formula against Durban Collegians in the third match before losing to eventual Pool C winners Siyaya Brakpan.
False Bay progressed to the quarter finals as the runners up.
