Gambe's Moment Of Madness

Ray Bande Senior Reporter—
MADNESS in great ones must never unwatched go, once wrote great playwright, William Shakespeare! In a typical moment of madness, least expected of a national football association board member, ZIFA Women Soccer League board member competitions, Cecilia Gambe, failed to contain her emotions in the face of perceived biased match officiating at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare on Sunday when she invaded the pitch in the 44th minute, charged towards referee, Brighton Chimene, making the obscene middle finger gesture.

The derogative gesture is widely known to communicate extreme contempt.

Gambe, who was shouting unprintable words as she invaded the field of play, was apparently incensed by Rusape-based referee, Brighton Chimene’s decisions against the home team during the Castle Lager Premiership match pitting, hosts Mutare City Rovers and How Mine.

Emotions started running high in the terraces when 27 minutes into the encounter Chimene sent Mutare City Rover’s player, Derby Duri to an early shower for a late lunge from behind on How Mine’s Charles Sibanda.

Although some neutrals felt that Chimene was a bit heavy handed in giving Duri a red card, at law, the 2014 Referee of the Year was spot on.

Things got worse as the match progressed and with a minute remaining before half time, Gambe could not stomach the decision by Chimene to award a retake of a free kick just outside the box and went onto the field of play, charged towards Chimene making the obscene middle finger gesture.

Once again the referee was actually spot on given that in executing the indirect kick, How Mine’s Kudzai Chideu set up Qard Amini’s whose shot went way off the target, but the referee instantly ordered a retake ostensibly under the pretext that the City Rovers wall had moved before How Mine players had any contact with the ball.
