FC Platinum’s unbeaten run halted
One of domestic football's most excellent sensational stories came to an end on Saturday afternoon as Norman Mapeza and his FC Platinum, who had gone for 29 league games without losing a match in the Castle Lager Premiership, fell 1–2 to ZPC Kariba at Mandava Stadium.
The remarkable record-breaking feat in the country's top-flight league which stretched from May 2015 had stood for exactly one year and 26 days.
The Platinum miners last lost a league game on 9 May in 2015 in a 0-1 defeat at the hands of the then defending champions Dynamos with Oscar Machapa scoring a last-gasp goal for Dembare. From then on it had been a sensational story for Mapeza and his men as they kept clean sheets in 14 of the 29 league matches they played since that Dynamos defeat.
They won 18 of their matches drawing 11, scoring 48 goals and conceding 14 in an impressive run that threatened to run until the end of the season but on Saturday afternoon they came up against a determined Sunday Chidzambwa led ZPC Kariba.
FC Platinum scored first through Winstone Mhango in the 16th minute and the Kariba based ZPC equalised with three minutes to the half time break through Tawanda Nyamandwe. Never Tigere then broke the hearts of the Platinum faithful with a well taken free kick three minutes from time to give ZPC three points and in the process ending the Platinum miners success story that had gone for 29 league games.
FC Platinum Norman Mapeza was hurt by the defeat and simply said, “It’s painful to lose at home”.
His opposite number, Sunday Chidzambwa was content with the victory, “I think today we defended troo well in both halves and we put away the two chances we created”, said chidzambwa.
Elsewhere, Dynamos had an expressive 2-1 win over Chapungu as they went into the tie after a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of some of their fans who were travelling for the game at Ascot Stadium. Dembare rallied from a goal down to score two quickfire goals in a space of three minutes. Hillary Mugoniwa put Chapungu ahead 8 minutes into the game and Dynamos scored through Masimba Mambare in the 20th minute and King Nasama three minutes later.
This was Dynamos’ 3rd win of the season following wins over Mutare City and Tsholotsho.
How Mine and Tsholotsho drew 1-1 in a Bulawayo Derby at White City Stadium.
