FC Platinum Retain Advantage In Title Race
Leaders FC Platinum moved four points ahead of CAPS United with a deserved 2-0 win over Dynamos in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Mandava Stadium on Saturday.
Platinum did the double over Dynamos for the first time, having beaten them 1-0 at Rufaro Stadium in May.
Dynamos had early chances, but Kevin Moyo headed in from a corner-kick for his first-ever goal for Platinum in the 10th minute.
A somewhat fortunate goal from Walter Musona made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute, as Ian Nekati's cross went in off the back of Musona's head.
Dynamos brought on Wisdom Mutasa and Dominic Mukandi at the start of the second half and the pair added some impetus, but FC Platinum soon got back on top of the game.
Mukandi hit the crossbar with a long-shot in the 84th minute, but Dynamos were simply not good enough and they clearly lacked a player comfortable in the centre-forward position.
Although FC Platinum were held to a 0-0 draw away to bottom-placed Border Strikers on Wednesday, they rose to the occasion in a game where pressure was high.
FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza remains cautious about his team's chances of winning a first league title.
“We're not going to think too much about this win otherwise we're going to put ourselves under pressure,” Mapeza told Sportszone. “We have to take each game as it comes.”
Dynamos coach Lloyd Mutasa admitted that his team had shortcomings.
“We had our fair share of chances, but the youngsters lacked composure, and we should have avoided those goals as they came from free headers,” said Mutasa.
In the other game played on Saturday, Chapungu were held in a goalless encounter against Bulawayo City.
