FC Platinum Cruise Through

FC Platinum are through to the next round of the Chibuku Super Cup triumphing 2-0 over Chapungu at Mandava stadium, setting the stage for a possible double this season.

Winston Mhango put the league log leaders ahead on the halftime mark from the penalty spot after Blessing Zabula had handled inside the box before Charles Sibanda cushioned the game with a strike, six minutes from time, his first since his return to the club in July.

Mhango had the chance to grab a brace in the second half after the Pure Platinum Play were awarded another penalty but the midfielder blew his effort over the bar.

Chapungu players and coaches contested the penalty decision by referee Thulani Ncube who adjudged that Zabula pushed Walter Musona off the ball. Police had to be called in to calm the situation.

FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza was thrilled with the win but downplayed the prospects of winning a double.

“We have just qualified for the next round of the tournament, of which I am happy but we can't talk of a double because we are not yet in the final. I applaud my players for working hard and I will not single any one of them but the whole team played so well," said Mapeza.

“Charles finally scored and it’s his job to do so. We never gave him pressure for we knew he would score. The midfielders worked so hard providing the passes and the defenders did well to cover for Mhari." added Mapeza.

Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino refused to comment on the two penalties against his team but concentrated on their performance which he said was satisfying despite the defeat.

“I would like to congratulate FC Platinum for qualifying for the quarter finals. Our focus now is on the league. I will not comment on the two penalties but it is the referee’s job to officiate and they are qualified to do so.

“I will however walk with my head high together with my team and I will not shoulder any blame even to one of them” said Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino

Platinum won the cup on its return in 2014 and were booted at the quarter final stage by Dynamos last season.
