Football fans clashed with police in Marseille for a third straight day, before fighting with each other at the town's Old Port.

The outburst of violence came just a few hours before England were due to kick off against Russia at Euro 2016 in the Mediterranean port city's Stade Velodrome -- one of five games classed as high-risk for hooliganism.

English, French and Russian fans were involved in the trouble, which saw police fire tear gas at the supporters. Six people were arrested and five injured, police told the BBC.

Marseille's police prefect said an English fan was in a "critical" condition after the clashes.

"Police intervened in a clash between English, Russian and French supporters in the Vieux-Port district," local police chief Laurent Nunez told AFP.

Fist fights and bottle throwing broke out between the supporters and broken glass lay strewn across the square as the police fired tear gas into the crowds, causing individuals to run.

Fans were seen being beaten to the floor and repeatedly kicked in the head, while bloodied fans were seen fleeing the scene as missiles continued to be thrown.

AFP reported seeing a man with a bloodied face receiving treatment on the ground after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Police water cannon arrived to try to control the fighting as they struggled to hold back the different groups. 

The clashes followed on from those that took place in Marseille on Thursday and Friday.

At least one England fan was arrested after French police used tear gas to disperse an apparent clash on Thursday, with Press Association Sport reporting that one Three Lions supporter suffered a head injury in the brawl after being hit across the face with a wooden chair.

Friday saw similar scenes as supporters who had been drinking for most of the day at the Queen Victoria pub in the Old Port district threw bottles at French riot police, who used tear gas to disperse them.

The officers, who wore full riot gear, were seen marching towards hundreds of England fans who ran away down the street.
