Dynamos, Highlanders Lose Ground

There were 13 goals scored on Sunday after a barren first day of week 18 on Saturday but the major talking point was the defeats suffered by Dynamos and Highlanders. Both teams lost with Identical 2-1 score lines against Border Strikers and Triangle respectively.

With the league now entering the homestretch and the leading teams Caps United and FC Platinum sharing spoils a day earlier, expectations were high that Dynamos and Highlanders were going to seize the opportunity and close in but they disappointed.

It’s been a tough time for both teams with goals and wins difficult to get in recent matches. Highlanders have lost three times and drawn once in their last four matches while Dynamos are now on a five match winless streak with four draws and one defeat.

Dembare managed to score a goal for the first time after four games but it was not enough as Clever Matendebure and William Nyoni's goals ensured Border Strikers get their most crucial victory this season. Vavheneki put up a determined performance despite struggling to put up a full squad as some players were refusing to train as they are owed some money by the club. Border strikers surged ahead nine minutes into the second half through Matendebure and Masimba Mambare restored parity a few minutes later but the home side clinched the winner with ten minutes remaining through chief striker William Nyoni. Dynamos' miserable afternoon was capped by the expulsion of Dominic Mukandi for slapping Border Strikers defender Ephraim Mwinga.

Highlanders continued with their miserable run, losing 2-1 to Triangle at Gibbo stadium. The defeat was Bosso's third on the trot after going down 1-0 to CAPS United followed by a 2-1 shock defeat to Mutare City Rovers on Thursday. Underrated midfielder Marvellous Mukumba put the home side ahead 5 minutes before the break and Malvin Gaki doubled the lead early in the second half.  Brian Banda got the consolation for Bosso as their poor show continued.

Eslewhere, Timothy January scored on the stroke of halftime to give How Mine a 1-0 win over Harare City at Luveve Stadium.

In Mutare at Sakubva stadium, Tsholotsho produced a stunning comeback in the last third of the match to force a 3-3 draw against Mutare City Rovers in arguably the most exciting match of the weekend. Goals from double scorer Nicholas Mundandishe and Maclive Phiri cancelled early strikes from Kudakwashe Gurure, Agrippa Murimba and Wonder Sithole.
