Double Achievable: Mapeza

FC Platinum won for the first time at Ascot Stadium in four years posting a crucial 2-0 victory over Chapungu, that kept their hopes for a league and cup double alive.

The win saw FC Platinum move into second place two points behind log leaders CAPS United who edged Harare City 1-0 and two points ahead of Highlanders who suffered a shock 2-1 to Tsholotsho at Barbourfields stadium.

FC Platinum had not won a match in Gweru since the days of Hardbody and later Chapungu.

The Zvishavane based side turned on the heat in the second half when they scored through Tarisai Rukanda, four minutes after the restart and Walter Musona.

''Many people ruled us out but this is football. We remained focused, we came here looking for a positive point and we got it. We were not worried about the goal margin but we just wanted a win," said Mapeza.

“The league and cup double is still feasible for us, we just need to remain focused for the remaining matches and collect maximum points. Everything is possible."

Chapungu had started the match the more offensive side with Agrippa Peperere getting the first chance of the match, seconds into the match after he was set up by Xolani Ncube but he blazed his effort over from inside the box.

Chapungu continued to enjoy more possession while FC Platinum were laid back, soaking the pressure opting to hit them on counter.

The strategy worked well in the second half with speed merchant Marshal Mudehwe orchestrating most of the attacks using the left channel.

It was from the left channel that Mudehwe turned Chapungu right back Johnson Mabhugu before setting up Rukanda who scored with a curling shot past Mazingi.

The Chapungu goalkeeper then gifted Platinum with the second goal when he fumbled a harmless looking cross from the right and allowed Musona to just tap into an empty net.

Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino conceded defeat but blamed his players for a poor showing.

“Without taking anything away from FC Platinum, we gifted with those goals. The first goal was a blunder from the defender and the second was a mistake from the goalkeeper," said Nyikadzino.
