Chiyangwa Confident Of Landing COSAFA Presidency
Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Dr Phillip Chiyangwa is confident of winning the COSAFA presidency at the regional body's elections scheduled for Saturday in South Africa.
Dr Chiyangwa will fight it out in the polls against long serving president, Suketu Patel from Mauritius who is seeking to extend his reign to 14 years as well as Danny Jordaan of South Africa who is making a return after chickening out four years ago.
“I am the leading candidate. If elected I will make sure that there is leadership quality and we will have a better understanding going forward. Actually there should not be elections at all on Saturday because I am leading the race. I feel there is no need for us to have an election," boasted Chiyangwa.
“I started the campaign quite early and I am above 75% as far as support is concerned and I am sure that on Tuesday some people will surrender. I have already declared my portion."
Patel has been in power since succeeding the disgraced Ishmael Bhamjee in 2006.
Jordaan another front runner is contesting the elections after withdrawing his candidature on the last minute four years ago in Botswana.
Chiyangwa has been meeting presidents of national associations from COSAFA member states canvassing for support and it appears has covered enough ground to steer himself to victory.
The 14 countries that make up the COSAFA bloc includes Angola,Botswana,Comoros,Lesotho,Madagascar,Malawi,Mauritius,Mozambique,Namibia,Seychelles,South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
