Chidzambwa Hails Costa Nhamoinesu

A centre back of repute during his heyday, before a career ending knee injury ravaged him in the 1980s, Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa is largely renowned for his defensive approach to the game.

The legendary gaffer believes stronger defences and not the best strike force can win you titles.

Chidzambwa has been thrust as Warriors interim coach for the Cecafa Cup which begin on December 3 and the veteran gaffer is worried about the dearth of centre backs in Zimbabwe.

He will announce his squad for the Cecafa Cup soon.

“When we talk of a good centre back we are looking at a player who is good with his head, can mark and has speed. A complete player in defence.

“At the moment we only have Costa (Nhamoinesu) to speak about, who is a very good centre-back. But age is no longer on his side,” said Chidzambwa.

Nhamoinesu plays for Czech Republic giants Sparta Prague and is 31.

Locally, Chidzambwa has been impressed by Yadah FC’s Jimmy Dzingai and Chapungu skipper Collen Kwaramba.

“Kwaramba is very good in the air. He has impressed me the few times I have seen him play.”

The How Mine pair of Kudzai Chideu, formerly with Dongo Sawmill and Frank Mukarati have also caught eye of the legendary gaffer.

The Cecafa Cup will run in Kenya from December 3-16 and Chidzambwa is looking to have his troops in camp a week before.
