Chidyamakono Set New Copa Record

GWANDA - A Neria Mushede second half strike saw Chidyamakono’s dream come true as they went on to set a new record in the history of girl’s Under-17 Copa Coca-Cola football tournament, defeating Bulawayo’s Magwegwe 1-0 in the final.

This ensured they were the first side to win the title for the fourth consecutive time at Phelandaba.

With three goals to her name in the tournament, Mashede said teamwork has been their source of success.

"I am very happy we have won. Unity, training and working has helped us to achieve our goal. This is my first time to participate in the Copa Coca-Cola tournament and I think the competition was good," said Mushede.

On their way to the finals, Chidyamakono beat Chipadze from Mashonaland Central 2-0 in the semi-finals.

In the boys section, Rujeko emerged winners when they beat Chinhoyi 4-1 on penalties.

Rujeko goalkeeper, Tanaka Majaji, who saved a penalty to inspire his side to victory said they worked hard after losing to Dewure in the final last year.

"I knew we were going to win because since last year we were working hard to win.

"We wanted to continue from where they left. I am happy. We are now going to start preparing for next year," said Majaji.

Rujeko beat Chemhanza from Mashonaland East 1-0 in Saturday's semi-finals.

Chidyamakono won 1-0 again last year against St Francis in the final.

The girls competition was running for the sixth year and boys its 28th edition but no team had won it 4 times in a row.
