Chicken Inn End Highlanders Nine Game Unbeaten Run

Chicken Inn beat Highlanders 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in match day 12 of the Castle lager PSL at Barbourfields stadium. This was the 11th meeting between the two clubs and Chicken Inn has won five times and drawn five times, only losing once since gaining promotion into the top flight league in 2011.

Chicken Inn who lost Edmore Chirambadare and Mitchel Katsvairo to Kaizer Chiefs, introduced their 2 new signings Darryl Nyandoro and Chris Semakweri playing their first league game for the Gamecocks.

Obadiah Tarumbwa and captain Clemence Matawu grabbed the goals for the Gamecocks in each half. Tarumbwa opened the scoring in the 28th minute after exchanging passes with Matawu before beating Njabulo Nyoni in goal for Highlanders.

Bosso tried to get the equalizer in the second half but to no avail. They pushed all the players upfront as their search for an equalizer intensified but Matawu got the second against the run of play in the 88th minute.

Highlanders fans who could not stomach the defeat, started throwing missiles onto the pitch and beating the Chicken Inn fans.

The violence was also compounded by the sending off to the stands of Highlanders coach Erol Akbay, who got frustrated with the delaying tactics of one Chicken Inn player as he ended up hitting him with ball.

Chicken Inn Coach, Rahman Gumbo was elated by the victory over the league pacesetters.

“We managed to silence their 12th men and everything went against them. I think you saw for yourself that we were in total control.

“I am still rebuilding after losing a number of key players. I was happy with the display that reduced Highlanders to an ordinary side. We showed them how football is played.

“All I need to do right now is to go and celebrate” said Gumbo.

Highlanders Captain Felix Chindungwe appealed to the fans to accept the result.

“We were  winning games and we all knew that one day we could lose (a) match but that is not the end.We lost a battle but not the war.

“The most important thing for us is to regroup and get back to our winning formula. In a game of football you win, draw or lose and such is football.

“We are hoping for the best and we already shifted our focus to the Triangle game which we are going to play at home “said the dreadlocked skipper.

The defeat ended Highlanders unbeaten run which had stretched to nine games.
