CHIBUKU Super Cup matches have been better than the league in terms of goal return, if statistics are anything to go by.
An average 2.5 goals have been scored in every match since the tournament started in 2014.
The quarterfinal stage of the 2016 edition ensured that there are now 105 goals scored to date from 42 matches.
What is clear is that the rate at which teams have been scoring in this tournament is better than in league matches of previous seasons.
It is only this year that there is a slight improvement.
After 216 league matches played so far in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, 437 goals have been scored at an average two goals per match.
Indications are that Chibuku Super Cup will remain much more exciting in terms of goals.
Harare City’s William Manondo remains the all time top scorer in the tournament with eight goals.
The defending champions Harare City have scored 28 of the 105 goals, 26,7 percent of the total haul.
They have also played the highest number of matches at 10, having played in all two finals.
FC Platinum are second-best scorers with 11 goals in eight matches while Highlanders are third with eight goals in six games played.
Ngezi Platinum, who have just played two games so far, has the best goals per match ratio, having scored seven goals so far.
Going into the semi-finals which will feature Highlanders against Ngezi Platinum and FC Platinum against Harare City, there are a lot of interesting records to consider.
Harare City remain the kings of the cup competition with eight wins and two draws while FC Platinum are second on that log with six wins and two draws.
If Harare City can negotiate their way through FC Platinum they will become the first club to reach a third consecutive final in the tournament.
FC Platinum will become the first team to win the title twice if they can get the better of Moses Chunga’s charges and go on and win the title.
Norman Mapeza stands a chance of becoming the first coach to win the cup twice.
Taurai Mangwiro who won it last year with Harare City was sacked during the season.
FC Platinum and Harare City are the only two teams in the history of the cup not to have been beaten in 90 minutes since the cup started in 2014.
The 2014 edition between FC Platinum and Harare City ended 1-1 in normal time before the former won on penalties.
Harare City won the 2015 edition, beating Dynamos 2-1 in the final at National Sports Stadium.
FC Platinum had been knocked out 7-6 on penalties by DeMbare in the quarterfinals after their match had ended goalless after 90 minutes.
For the record, 2016 will have a new team in the history of the cup competition entering the final – between Highlanders and Ngezi Platinum.
