Chelsea Open Seven-Point Lead With Leicester Rout
Chelsea strengthened their grip on the lead at the top of the Premier League as they earned a 3-0 win over outgoing-champions elect Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Blues got off to a flying start and took the lead after just six minutes, the Foxes failing to clear their lines to allow Eden Hazard to lay the ball off for Marcos Alonso, who fired a curling drive past Kasper Schmeichel and into the back of the net.
Antonio Conte’s men were 2-0 up just six minutes after the break as Leicester again struggled to deal with a cross into the box, with possession eventually falling to Alonso on the edge of the area, where the Spaniard needed just one touch to tee himself before drilling his shot home via a wicked deflection off captain Wes Morgan to leave the goalkeeper no chance.
Chelsea weren’t done yet and added their third after 71 minutes, Pedro producing a sublime back-heel flick to find Willian, who returned the favour via a deflection off Schmeichel to gift the Spaniard an open goal into which he planted his header to well and truly end the tie as a contest.
The result saw the west London giants climb seven points clear at the top of the standings, although Liverpool could cut that gap when they fact bitter rivals Manchester United on Sunday, while Leicester sit six points off the relegation zone.
