Cheetahs Begin Assupol Preps
After winning the second tier Olympic qualifier second tier Challenge Trophy, the Cheetahs turn their attention to the Assupol Sevens tournament.
Daniel Hondo’s boys start their preparations with a speed test at Harare Sports Club on Monday night.
“We start with a speed test on Monday, then we move to ball skills as the week progresses,” said Hondo.
The former Cheetahs centre added selection for the final squad would depend on availability as mostly European-based players are likely not to be released.
The tournament is set for the Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch and is divided into two tiers with six teams in the international section and then 16 local club teams competing for a trophy of their own.
Kenya, Zimbabwe, a Namibian invitational team, a Western Province invitational team and the SA Academy Sevens team have all been invited to compete with Neil Powell’s men as they gear up for Rio.
Kenya will also be heading to the Olympic Games after a successful HSBC World Sevens Series campaign which saw them finish seventh and pick up a historic first Cup title in Singapore.
