Chandisaita Quits At 41, Makonese Wants to Play On

WHILE Black Rhinos defender Brighton Chandisaita chose to finally hang his boots at the age of 41, another veteran centre back Zvenyika Makonese is refusing to give up football.

Chandisaita announced his retirement at a Black Rhinos function on Wednesday ending a career that spanned close to two decades.

Makonese will be 41 by the time the 2018 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season begins but the former Orlando Pirates player wants to play on.

He could become the league’s second oldest player after newly promoted Herentals’ Innocent Benza (45) also indicated he would feature for the Harare side.

The veteran Makonese has often been deployed as a centre forward at Shabanie Mine and helped the Zvishavane side survive relegation.

He now wants 2018 to be his swansong season.

“Next season I will be playing football again but I think it will be my last season as a player,” said Makonese.

“In football however, you never know if clubs still want you to continue. I will decide the way forward for the 2019 season.”

At 40, Makonese was six years older than his coach Takesure Chiragwi.
