Castle Lager PSL Matchday 10 Sunday Wrap
ZPC Kariba picked their first victory of the season when they beat Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium with Dynamos losing to Harare City while CAPS United came out with a point at Maglas Stadium.
Bosso Get ZPC Shock
Highlanders 1-2 ZPC Kariba
Two goalkeeping howlers by Ariel Sibanda gifted visiting ZPC Kariba three points in Sunday’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League at Barbourfields Stadium.
Sibanda’s first boob came on the stroke of the hour when he spilled Samuel Makawa’s low shot into the path of Moses Demera, who prodded it home to cancel Ozias Zibande’s 42nd minute lead for Bosso.
With the match seemingly headed for a share of the spoils, Bosso pushed everyone into the box for a corner and Sibanda needlessly stood in the centre circle in the second minute of the referee’s optional time and when ZPC Kariba cleared their lines, the ball fell to substitute Tawanda Nyamandwe, who made a shot run, aimed at goal and scored, with the goalkeeper stranded in no man’s land, to give the visitors their first win of the season.
The heartbreak came after Highlanders were denied a second by the crossbar in the 81st minute when Honest Moyo’s header off a Brian Banda corner kick cannoned off the woodwork.
The victory brought relief to ZPC Kariba coach Godfrey Tamirepi after his team had gone for nine games without a win. The win moved ZPC Kariba three places up the ladder from the basement of the table to 15th.
Zibande had put Highlanders ahead with a fine header off an Honest Moyo cross three minutes before the break.
CAPS United Unable To Break Maglas Jinx
Shabanie Mine 1 – 1 CAPS United
CAPS United’s 13-year winless league run at Maglas continued Sunday after they were held by Shabanie Mine in Castle Lager Premier League duel in the mining town.
Maglas has been an unhappy hunting ground for the Green machine even on the occasions when they have won the championship as they did in 2016.
And the script continued Sunday with Lloyd Chitembwe’s men having to come from behind to ensure a share of spoils after John Zhuwawo scored in the second half to cancel a first-half strike by Shabanie captain Trevor Ajana.
The last time Makepekepe won at Maglas in the league was way back on 24 April 2005 when Leonard Tsipa scored to give them a narrow 1-0 victory.
A spirited second-half performance could have given Chitembwe’s men rare maximum points in Zvishavane but shooting accuracy seemed to have deserted their forwards.
Shabanie’s moment of brilliance came on the stroke of half-time when Kibaki ‘Siboza’ Dhlamini turned former Warriors defender Milton Ncube round and round before threading in a cross that was converted by Trevor Ajana.
After the breather, Chitembwe’s men pushed hard for the equaliser but were constantly denied by heroic defending from the hosts’ backline. Twenty minutes from time Ncube sent in a pin-point cross to Zhuwawo who headed home to level matters in a tightly contested affair.
Mutare City Hold Black Rhinos
Mutare City 1-1 Black Rhinos
There was no winner in this evenly balanced Castle Lager Premiership affair which ended in a draw Mutare City Rovers held Black Rhinos match at Vengere Sunday.
The match started with Chauya Chipembere the more determined and literally camping in the jittery City’s half in search of an early goal but City scored against the run of play In the 23rd minute City when striker Khumbulani Njovu headed home from a long throw from Evans Chikwaikwai beating Rhinos keeper Ashely Rayners and they maintained that lead until halftime.
In the second half, Rhinos coach Hebert Maruwa responded by making a double substitution bringing on Tapiwa Sibanda and Milton Kureva for Edgar Chigidi and Allen Gahadzikwa.
The substitution immediately paid dividends as Wellington Taderera’s shot inside the box beat a diving Tafadzwa Dube in goal for City to restore parity in the 52nd minute.
The teams exchanged attacks but could not find the winner.
Lameck Strikes Again For Triangle
Triangle 2 – 0 Bulawayo Chiefs
In-form striker Lameck Nhamo continued with his purple patch as he scored a beauty of a goal from a free-kick that saw his side dispatching the visiting Bulawayo Chiefs in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Gibbo Stadium.
Lameck scored his fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute curling his effort around the Amakhosi defence with the ball also beating Bulawayo Chiefs goalkeeper Kelvin Nyoni.
Bulawayo Chiefs substitute Dylan Chivandire had a chance to equalise but he failed to beat Triangle goalkeeper Tapiwa Chilenga in a one on one situation in the 75th minute.
The spurned chance, however, came to haunt the visitors as the home side sealed the game two minutes later.
Russel Madamombe who was adjudged to have been fouled rose and dusted himself up to provide the second goal as his well taken set piece was arrowed into the net by Anelka in the 77th minute.
The visitors almost got their consolation goal but Chilenga tipped Moses Majika’s rasping shot over the bar in what was the visitors last chance of real action with only four minutes remaining on the clock.
