CAPS Utd beat Ferroviarrio
CAPS United ………… (1) 2
Ferroviario da Beira ………….. 0
CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe had an appreciation of the enormous work that lies ahead of their scheduled return to the CAF Champions League after watching his side beat visiting Ferroviarrio da Beira in their first competitive practice match at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Abbas Amidu and Amon Kambanje either side of the break secured them the morale-boosting win.
CAPS United survived some early frights with goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda twice being forced to leave his line before Beira’s Correia rattled the woodwork on 22 minutes.
But Abbas still put Makepekepe ahead when he shook off two defenders in the penalty box and found the bottom corner on the half hour mark.
Second half substitute Kambanje sealed the match in the game in the 77th minute when he received a clever pass through the middle from newboy Ronald Chitiyo.
Kambanje made no mistake placing the ball beyond the reach of former Dynamos goalkeeper Willard Manyatela, who is now with the Mozambique champions.
But Chitembwe was too realistic not to be flattered by the result. The former midfielder’s verdict was that his side has not yet reached the level he wants them to be by the time they plunge into Africa.
“For now I am not really looking at performance. First things first. I am looking at the conditioning aspect.
“I think the endurance aspect is there but the element of speed is not yet there – speed of thought, speed of reaction as well as speed of execution. But, generally I am very impressed by the desire. I am very happy with the commitment these guys have shown. I am quite happy,” said Chitembwe.
