CAPS United March On
CAPS United turned on the heat in the second half to overturn a first half goal deficit to beat Lioli of Lesotho 2-1 in the CAF Champions League preliminary round second leg match at the National Sports Stadium.
The Green Machine, despite getting numerous early chances with Ronald Chitiyo coming close hitting the cross bar and Simba Nhivi missing from the rebound, were stunned when the visitors took the lead in 19th minute with a well taken shot from Tsepo Seturumane.
Lioli briefly had the momentum and nearly got a second but Seturumane’s curling shot which intended to catch an outdrawn Edmore Sibanda was tipped over by the big goalkeeper.
However CAPS United came back the better side in the second half and a brilliant performance in a space of five minutes had their fans singing until the end of the match.
The turning point was the introduction of Abbas Amidu for the in effective Tafadzwa Rusike at the start of the second half.
Chitiyo who was brilliant all afternoon spotted Nhivi with a lobbed ball over the Lioli defence and the striker squeezed the ball past the goalkeeper on the 50th minute.
Five minutes later, Chitiyo was the one to benefit from Nhivi’s industry when he pounced on to a rebound after Lioli goalkeeper had punched back into play a shot from Nhivi.
Chitiyo rounded one defender before placing the ball at the near post, past the goalkeeper.
CAPS United buoyed by the lead continued to pile on pressure but failed to add on more goals.
The Zimbabwe champions will now meet TP Mazembe of the DRC in the first round of the competition.
