CAPS United Clinch Fifth League Title

CAPS United clinched their fifth league title and their first in 11 years after they beat Chapungu 1-0 at Ascot on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Simba Sithole scored after only two minutes and United hung on for 90 minutes or so to clinch the championship and a $100 00 cheque from the league sponsors Delta Beverages.

Sithole, who also scored the solitary goal when Caps United beat Ngezi Platinum Stars 1-0 in the penultimate round, tapped home after the Chapungu defence failed to deal with a Ronald Pfumbidzai free kick.

CAPS United finished the season on 63 points, two more than their closest rivals FC Platinum who also beat Tsholotsho FC 3-0 at Luveve on Saturday.

The last time Makepekepe won the league title was in 2005 when current coach Lloyd Chitembwe was still a player.

Chitembwe became the first person to win the league title with Makepekepe both as a player and a coach.

He also won it as a player in 1996 and 2004.

“Let me have my time in the sun, we worked hard for this. It has been a big journey and what a wonderful ride it was,” said Chitembwe.

United survived a late scare when Chapungu striker headed just wide 11 minutes from fulltime while substitute Dominic Chungwa could have killed the game in the 81st minute but his effort from close range was blocked by keeper Talbert Shumba.

Chapungu substitute Xolani Ncube caused all sorts of problems for CAPS United but they hung on until the final whistle.
