CAPS Thump Zamalek To Keep CAF Champions League Hopes Alive

CAPS United will live to fight another day in their pursuit for a place in the CAF Champions League knockout stages after registering one of their biggest wins in the competition beating Egyptian giants Zamalek 3-1 at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Zimbabwe champions got off to a good start dominating the early exchanges and were rewarded in the 31st minute as Ronald Pfumbidzai shot through a crowded defence in a goal mouth melee, to put CAPS ahead.

Stanley Owahuchi drew the White Knights level with a minute to half time as his shot bounced off the keeper Prosper Chigumba and hit the back of the net despite spirited efforts by Justice Jangano to keep it out.

Abbas Amidu restored the Green Machine’s in the 76th minute slotting the ball into the net to set up a tense finale to the game, and just as Zamalek were piling pressure looking for an equalizer, Amidu added a third and the final blow going on a solo run after breaking from his on-half and rifled his shot past Ahmed El Shenawy in goal for the visitors.

A win for CAPS in their final group game away to USM Alger will see them through to the knockout stages as they are now on six points only two behind USM Alger and Al Ahli Tripoli who both have 8 points.
