Caps Goalie Buries Brother, Available For Champs League

CAPS United goalkeeper Jorum Muchambo will be part of the squad travelling to Lesotho on Friday after burying his brother Brighton in Marondera today (Thursday).

Muchambo had been doubtful for the Champions League first leg match against Lesotho champions Lioli on Saturday after his brother and former Chapungu goalkeeper Brighton passed away on Tuesday.

However, Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe confirmed that Jorum will be part of the squad that leaves for Maseru via Johannesburg at 720AM on Friday.

The match between FC Lioli and Caps United will be played at Sesotho Stadium at 4PM.

“We had given him two days off to attend to the funeral of his brother, but after the burial today (Thursday) he has indicated that he will be okay to travel,” said Chitembwe.

Brighton passed away at Thornhill Airbase Hospital after a short illness.

He was 42 and is survived by his wife Coza Dube and two daughters.

Chapungu secretary general Mkululi Dube said they lost a loyal player who served the team generously.

‘Muchambo passed on at Thornhill airbase camp hospital early this morning (yesterday) and burial arrangements were still sketchy.

“We have lost a very loyal player who served Chapungu for close to 12 years. He joined the club in 1996 and a year later was attested into the airforce where he served until the time of his death.

“He was the team’s goalkeeper when Innocent Chogugudza hung his boots and played a major role for the team,” said Dube.

Muchambo played for the air force side until 2008 and along the way played alongside his young brother who is now at CAPS United.

His major highlight was his exploits against Dynamos during the 2005 Madision Trophy although his side suffered a 1-0 loss.

At Chapungu he also rubbed shoulders with CAPS United’s Edmore “Zikeeper” Sibanda, Phillip Marufu, Maxwell ‘Marhino” Dube, Eddie Nyika, Eddie Dube, Cuthbert Malajila among several others.

Born on April 27 1975 Muchambo was the air force side goal minder in from 1996 to 2008 and was last month appointed to become the team’s goalkeepers coach.

The big framed goalkeeper is credited for identifying several goalkeepers now playing in the Premier League including his sibling Jorum and Edmore Sibanda who are now with CAPS United.

After retiring from football Muchambo moved in to coaching and they joined hands with now bald headed Tavaka Gumbo.
