CAPS & FC Platinum Dominate 2016 Soccer Stars

LEAGUE champions CAPS United provided three players Hardlife Zvirekwi, Leonard Tsipa and Ronald Pfumbidzai on the 2016 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Soccer Stars of the Year list after the completion of voting at Mandel Training center in Harare Tuesday morning.

Runners up FC Platinum also had three, Goalkeeper of the Year hot favourite Petros Mhari, central midfielder Winston Mhango and forward Walter Musona.

In a season they made a mockery of the big institution they represent, Dynamos who finished outside the top four for the first time since 2006, had only one player on the list – Godknows Murwira.

Highlanders had a single player Peter Muduhwa, a rising centre back whose tough tackles and intelligent reading of the game won him many hearts.

Hwange’s find of the season, Gift Mbweti also made it onto the final list, thanks to his nine goals for the coal miners who overally had an indifferent season.

Mbweti was the second highest top scorer behind Tsipa who clinched the Golden Boot award with 11 goals.

Ngezi Platinum Stars were rewarded for their fairytale season, in which they won the Chibuku Super Cup in their debut top flight season, when their skipper Liberty Chakoroma was named among the best eleven for 2016.

Ageless Clemence Matawu, made it two in a row as he also featured last season.

The Chicken Inn midfielder is a former Soccer Star of the Year having won the top gong back in 2006.

Highlanders’ Rahman Kutsanzira, Talent Chawapiwa (ZPC Kariba) and Mutare City Rovers’ sensational youngster Kudakwashe Gurure missed narrowly.

The 2016 Soccer Star of the Year, the Coach of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year and the Most Promising Player were also voted for but their identities will be revealed on Friday night at a special banquet in the capital.

From the voting pattern, it looks like the Soccer Star of the Year could be a contest among the trio of Zvirekwi, Mhari and Tsipa.

Mhari is a sure bet for the Goalkeeper of the Year while CAPS United gaffer Lloyd Chitembwe is the favourite for the Coach of the Year.

Bosso’s Prince Dube is in the run for the Most Promising Player award.

Soccer Stars of the Year: Liberty Chakoroma (Ngezi Platinum Stars), Clemence Matawu (Chicken Inn), Leonard Tsipa (CAPS United), Hardlife Zvirekwi (CAPS United), Ronald Pfumbidzai (CAPS United), Gift Mbweti (Hwange), Peter Muduhwa (Highlanders), Godknows Murwira (Dynamos), Petros Mhari (FC Platinum), Winston Mhango (FC Platinum), Walter Musona (FC Platinum).
