Caps Crisis, Jere Intervenes

CAPS UNITED president Farai Jere has promised to pay the players part of their outstanding salary in a bid to pacify the Makepekepe camp ahead of a crunch Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Ngezi Platinum Stars on Sunday.

H-Metro reported that Caps United players delayed their Tuesday training demanding their outstanding dues.

The players are owed a month’s salary and winning bonuses.

And Jere moved in to quell the impasse Wednesday afternoon when he addressed the players after their training session.

A source within the camp said the Caps United president had promised to pay part of the outstanding dues but could not reveal how much.

“The president has assured us that we will get something before the game against Ngezi Platinum Stars but not the whole amount we are owed,” said the source.

However, Jere emerged confident from the meeting and declared that all was well within the Makepekepe family.

“The players were saying they never had an intention to down tools, what I know is they requested to see me three weeks ago, but I was very busy preparing for my exams and  it wasn’t about the money.

“They just wanted to see their president and find out whether we are going to participate in the Champions League or not,” said Jere.

“Threatening to down the tools when the guys are training like this, I do not know where those things are coming from.

The Green Machine, who are on 57 points and two more than second placed FC Platinum, need an outright victory against Ngezi Platinum to cement their chances of clinching a first league title in 11 years.

Should Makepekepe beat Madamburo and FC Platinum fail to beat Highlanders at Mandava, the green and white half of the capital could celebrate the league title as early as Sunday evening.

Jere added.

“These guys have gone for three months without a salary before and they have done well under the current conditions.

“A salary arrear of one month is actually quiet commendable,” said Jere.

“They (players) know what they want, they do not need any motivation from me. They just missed me, today’s (Wednesday) meeting was a routine arrangement, and we always meet and talk about the state of the affairs.
